I finally got a picture of the lady who has the feather’s missing from her neck. I wanted to post them to see if anyone had any additional advice. We are keeping the purple spray and a lotion on her daily. I may have to isolate her though if it doesn’t get better soon, but I hate to as she loves being outside and jumping the fence to explore. So if you have any ideas on what it could be or if you have dealtย with this before let me know your ideas. Thanks ๐

Hej from Sweden!
Boy I sure am glad to have my iPhone , it keeps me connected while recovering from the flu.
My ladies had dropped so much of their feathers just before winter I thought they would freeze, silly hens. Thank goodness we had heaters in thier hen house to keep them warm as they slowly grew back!
I have seen hens with sweaters so that just migh be an idea for her during cold weather. As far as the cause, have you checked for mites? Can you run her by a country vet?
Sorry I couldn’t be more help.
We haven’t seen any mites or lice, or any bugs on the girls and this is the only bad one… one other girl I think has lost a few feathers, but she doesn’t seem like this girl. I also thought since it was so cold we wouldn’t have the issues with mites or lice, etc. Also since none of the other girls looked like that and it was only on her neck I though it wasn’t mites. We don’t have a vet that won’t charge an arm n leg for a check. We will if we need to. I hope you keep feeling better so you can move around soon ๐
Looks to me that the other chickens are pecking at it or maybe she was attacked by something and is healing? How long has it looked like that?
I think soemthing happened to pull them out and now the other girls are picking at her. I may have to seperte her to heal ๐ฆ She will hate that ๐ฆ She has been this way about 3 weeks now but not bad at first then slowly worse (lost a few more feathers then got the red).
I would just separate her overnight. Have you tried this? This blog talks about using Tiger Balm to stop the picking. Good idea. http://freerangeliving.blogspot.com/2010/04/chicken-first-aid.html. Hope it gets better!
Thank you for the input I will check out the site and try seperating her for a bit ๐ I have something like Tiger Balm we are using, but if it doesn’t work we will have to try the real thing ๐
Strange. Glad you are taking care of it though.
Yes strange… I am doing me best to heal the issue ๐
No ideas but I had to comment that I hope she gets to feeling and looking better soon.
Me too we are working on it ๐
Do you have a dusting area in or around your chicken house? I’m almost thinking it may be lice but if only one chicken has it, it’s probably not. Call your local extension office or if you have a vet school near you call them or send an email to one that is close to you.
I was thinking lice or mites, but none of the other girls look like that…one maybe be has a few missing, but this is the ony girl liek that. They have a dustign area in my garden and in the coop. Calling a vet school is a good idea thanks ๐
