Summer Ending? Or Not?

Summer is coming to an end… you would never know that by the heat the last couple of days. Today was so hot and humid that even the rain didn’t help… it only made it more humid. All these weather changes have upset my head and it let me know with a nice headache tuned migraine today. The pups have enjoyed being inside and out of the heat. They are such good sports humoring their mom 😉 I just love my boys 🙂

Whites Ferry

Have you ever been on a cable operated ferry… if you have been to Whites Ferry then you have 🙂OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

A few weeks back my mom, step-father, and I went on this neat little ferry in Maryland.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It starts out on one side of the water…OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The cars load up… I think it holds 15 cars at a time…OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It then starts across towards you…OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It gets closer and closer…OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

You can really start to see the cable the closer it comes…OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The cable pulling the ferry through the water is interesting to watch…OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

You see the cable tightening as the ferry comes closer…OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then the ferry is almost on your side…OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then all the cars load up…OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

And you start back the other way…OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

You get a nice 2-3 minute ride…

Adventures in preserving food…

What a nice weather weekend…Gerber

I got a lot done including some canning… today it was ketchup. A couple of weekends ago it was yellow tomato salsa…OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I have already given a couple of jars away to family who have been visiting and wanted to raid my stash… OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I have also been making batches of tomato sauce to freeze. I start with a bunch of tomatoes’ washed…OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then cooked with all sorts of yummy seasoning and veggies…OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then pure it till smooth, put it in freezer containers, and into the downstairs freezer for the winter 🙂 I also canned some tomatoes diced and whole for my stash 🙂OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I am hoping this year I have enough to last all winter… I hate taking out the last jar too early 😦 In the garden, I still have tomatoes, peppers, and a few green beans growing, so I hope to keep stocking my freezer and caning shelves 🙂

Ten Things Learned While Raising Chickens

Keeping chickens is a big job. Much of the time you are learning new things about chicken keeping and the rest of the time it is maintaining of food, water, health, etc. Along this process you learn a lot and have a lot of fun.

Here are ten things I have learned so far about raising chickens:

1. The more you handle them as young chicks, while they are still in the  heat lamp box, it will make your chickens easier to catch, better tempered, and just easier to work with should you need to if they get sick, hurt, etc.buff chicks

2. Loosing your first chicken is the worst… it never gets easy, but each one after isn’t as hard.Chickn

3. Having your own fresh eggs when ever you need them is the best feeling.New eggs

4. Knowing you “grew” your own food makes you feel accomplished and healthy.Sepia Chick

5. Build the coop/run you want from the beginning, chickens don’t like changes to where they lay and sleep. They will show you by laying fewer eggs for a while.Chickens laying

6. Hubby says they are a lot more work then you think, cost more money then you think, and poop a lot.Buff bottom

7. Each chicken has their own personality, just like a person.Buff chick

8. Chickens like mischief and some jump fences.Buff chick fence

9. Chickens love tasty treats especially watermelon, corn cobs, and bread.Big chick breaks in

10. Chickens provide amusement and comic relief… no TV needed.Chickens run

Missing Friend

It is already half way though the week and I don’t know where the time went. Baxter and Chase are missing their friend, but have adjusted back to their routine.

Best of Friends

Best of Friends

We let them spend some extra time outside running today as it was so nice. The weather was just beautiful and made you not want the day to end. After I got off work I was able to enjoy the beautiful sun and breeze with the pups 🙂  I could see at times the pups checked the drive way when they heard a car going by slowly… maybe seeing if their friend was back. Don’t worry Baxter and Chase…He will be back and we are going to visit him next year 🙂

What a great weekend…

We had a great weekend at our place. Hubby’s sister and her family came to visit. This included her hubby, two boys, and their dog Manny a 7 year old schnauzer. We were a little concerned that our dogs would have the same issues they had with my uncles dog, but this time they quickly became the best of friends…OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It was fun to see them play, run in the yard, and just figure out their order. The family is here until tomorrow and we will miss having them when they go. I know the dogs will miss Manny. I have a bunch of photos of the pups over the weekend and will share more with you this week as well as some more photos of our trip to the State Fair. Hope you are having  a good Labor Day weekend if you are in the USA. (even if you aren’t you can celebrate with us) 😉
