Sweet Sleepy Grayson

This is my sweet kitty last CHRISTmas time. He loved to snuggle and sleep on the CHRISTmas blanket by the tree.
We have had a hard time finding a tree this year. Our normal tree place doesn’t open till the 1st and our tradition has always been to get our tree the day after thanksgiving (any one else do this?). But this year hubby was working so we couldn’t go out. Then we we visited some other places they were either closed or didn’t really have trees to choose from. I know the Christmas tree industry has been taking a hit, but it has been obvious this year. Hopefully we can find a tree soon :/

Memories of September

Last September we were able to go to the lake for a little vacation with my folks. It was actually one of the most relaxing vacations since our honeymoon over 10 years ago. Our boys came. Our lab/healer mix wanted nothing to do with the water or boat. We barley got him on the double decker dock.

Yet our terrier mix Chase absolutely loved everything about the place… the lake house, the dock, the water to swim in, and especially the boat. He loved riding on the boat and we had to make him get off when it was time to go in for the day. He also loved watching the fish from the dock and using his life jacket to swim. For a farm dog he adjusted to being a lake dog quickly 😉

Late Summer Update

Our little piece of God’s earth is trying to keep up with the change in weather from bouts of rain to dry humid heat. The grass is good when we get some rain and the chickens love all the bugs…

The birds are still having babies and one mom has taken over our smaller birdhouse…

Inside I am trying to keep up with the housework and animals coming in and out. Chase and Grayson are always under foot trying to be “helpful”. But I do love their company.

Its almost our favorite month… September. Hope you are doing well wherever you are 🙂

A look back cat

I was going though some old pictures last night and came across ones of baby Grayson…

Grayson duck

He had his 3rd birthday this month and I can’t believe he used to be this small…

Baby grayson sun

Any could fit in one of my hands when we first got him…

Baby grayson

He was such a small and snuggly little baby…

Grayson Christmas

And he has grown to be a long lean cat who isn’t really that big, but is pretty long 🙂

Grayson Big

He’s not super snuggly anymore except when he first wakes up or wakes you up in the early morning hours… but he is loveable, fun, and zany at times and we wouldn’t trade him.

Summer grass

I am so glad that the summer grass has come in and the chickens have plenty of fresh, green, healthy, grass to forage in.

Chickns grass

Happy chickens=healthy chickens=good eggs 😉

Happy Happy Chickens!

The grass is back, the tress are coming out, the flowers are blooming, and the chickens are happy.

Yet its either hot and humid or were having thunder storms and tornado warnings… I am not sure what season to call this, its not spring, or summer… I think I will just call it crazy!

Back to business…

The snow is starting to melt and the girls are enjoying getting back out to forage

They are enjoying being out in the parts of the yard that are free from snow

And finding bugs that are coming out now that the snow is melting

I am happier because I am getting more eggs

They are much happier now that they can be out in the yard roaming which is what they are used to.

This looks a little more like spring…

A few weeks ago my friend and her father got a new mama goat and her two kid goats.

A little boy…

And a little girl…

They are so cute. I just love baby goats. They are probably one of my favorite, if not my favorite baby farm animal.

Come on how can you not love this face…

They got them to keep in with the chickens to help with flying predators, like hawks. My friend’s family also has a couple year old cows…

And a big flock of 21 week old golden and silver laced wyandotte chickens…

They only have a few acres but do a lot with them. I am hoping spring will come soon, the grass will come back, and the warmer temperatures will come for our chickens sakes. 😉

First Day of Spring… I think NOT

So “they” say yesterday was the first official day of spring. Well at our place yesterday and today looked something like this…

Snow barn

Not that I am complaining as it was the only good snow we actually got this whole winter. Hubby and I were both home, no thanks to my county job. They were too cheap to let us off in a foot of snow so they put us on liberal leave, so I took off. I am not dumb enough to drive with people around here who have no idea how to drive in the snow. Hubby and I enjoyed two days together. We had a great time taking care of the animals, doing things inside the house, I cooked a lot, baked some, we cleaned the vehicles off, played games, and we watched the birds.

We had some company watching the birds, as little Grayson is an avid bird watcher. He spent most of the day at his bird watching spot very much entertained.

We get a little variety of birds like woodpeckers, blue jays, blue birds, nuthatches, cardinals, etc.

3 birds

It’s hard to get pictures of them all as by the time I would get my camera they would fly off. We even had our squirrel visitor.

squirl

Some of them liked to stay on the ground and eat the seed that fell from the bird feeders. Others flew all over from tree, to feeder, to the ground playing and eating in the snow.

Birds snow

We have a few pairs of cardinals. The males…

And the females are both pretty to me and I counted at least 4 pairs today.

Looks like we got at least the foot of snow they said we would get. The chickens won’t be happy they still can’t get out tomorrow, but the treats of corn, seeds, veggies, and fruits we have been giving them, have kept them happy for now. Hope you are seeing spring where you are.

Sad News

It’s official… we have a fox 😦 We have been pretty lucky here that predators usually stay away because the dogs are in with the chickens off and on all day and until bed time). The smell of the dogs and us usually keep them out of the fenced in area we have for the dogs and chickens. But not this fox… Sunday night we went to lock up the girls and found this one missing…

other girl

We looked and looked and never found her. We assumed we had a predator. Well Tuesday morning we woke up and two more girls were mulled… Luckily hubby found them (or what was left of them). We found out it was our old girl…

old girl

And my only blue egg layer that had been gotten…

blue layer

I was pretty upset this predator got my blue egg layer (well I was upset about all- never fun to have chickens die like that). We predator proofed our coop and the area more, and had to finish in a bad thunder storm. Then Tuesday night before we let the boy out we would check the area. About 9:30pm I went to open the back door so the boys could go out and a fox shot out from behind hubbys grill, down the back porch steps, and across the yard. By the time hubby got there the fox was in the neighbors field. This fox must go he’s too bold and I can’t have him killing my chickens. I am praying he doesn’t get anymore.
