Growing and Learning

I said in my last post I would post about our chicken run we built for the baby chicks to be outside in, yet safe from predators like hawks. And it works we have had a hawk try to get them in here without success. We have also used it to separate chickens as needed like when they are minor sick or injured. Keeps them outside with the flock, but separate so they don’t get worse and they can focus on healing.

Our babies seem to love it as they can jump, run around, stretch their legs, practice using their wings, and they can play on little logs or things we put in for them.

They also like it when I put their food in there along with the water that is always available.

Usually they forage a lot then go back for their food as they are just learning and haven’t figured out yet how to get more food from the outside.

Chase is usually close by and keeps an eye on them. You’ll usually find him laying by the run or sometimes napping by it. Other times he’ll run around a little then come back to check on them like in this picture.

Chase has been running around before I took this picture so he was a little tired and hot here.

The big girls also get to check out their soon to be new roomies and the babies can get used to the big girls too. Some of the big girls are more interested then others.

The run is about 6-7 feet long and about 4 feet wide. The top is mostly tarped to protect them and provide shade. The other part has a screen over it where we get in and out and lets sun in. This gives the babies choice of sun or shade while still protecting them. The whole thing as you can see has chicken wire all around it and the tarp hangs off one side for more shade option.

They really love being outside more and it gives us a place to let them out without having to be right there with them or worry. Happy Friday!

Introducing….

I know I have been gone for a long time. Had a lot going on, but not much blog worthy. A couple weeks ago I was at our family friends house and my friends dad presented me with the new little cuties….

So introducing our 8 new baby chicks. So if I sexed them correct we have 1 boy and 7 girls…

This is our little boy… funny thing about him was he was the runt and the smallest.

Then we had 3 little black ones that are different enough you can tell them apart….

And we had 4 lighter colored brown/gold/yellow with a little grey girls….

They are all cute and growing so fast. They started to get out in their safe run to start to learn to be chickens even more, but more on that later. Hope you enjoyed seeing these cuties today. Let me know if you are raising any of these babies. 🙂

Friends

It’s nice to have friends you can count on… ones that are really there to help when you need it. Ones who support you and give you really advice and care even if it’s not what you always want to hear.

It’s also great to be that kind of friend. Someone who is there for others when they need you, even if it may be an inconvenience to you.

Hope you have those kind of friend/friends in your life as well as being that kind of friend to others you care about.

Woodland Friends

While on my trip I came across some woodland friends…

bambi

I remember seeing the movie Bambi for the first time. I can remember most of my first experiences with Disney movies and I bet most of you can as well.

thumper

You can remember the characters, what you felt, and what your impression was of the movies as a child. Funny when you watch them as an adult you can have some of the same experiences as well as different ones. Sometimes an adult perspective can take away some of the magic if your not careful. 😉

What is family?

As I thought about family this past Easter I was reminded that family is not just the one we are born into. It is the journey of the people the Lord brings into our lives.

Its those special people who treat you like they are blood relatives (and sometimes better) and you feel the same about them. Its about the relationships we develop with those we call friends, but sometimes are more like family.

As hubby and I still pray and hope to be able to have kids of our own, I know I still have an important job to do with each and every child I come in contact with. Its my job to be a good Godly role model for them. To treat them with love and kindness. To point them in the right direction and help them to feel special.

And in the process I get joy back and that warms my heart. I hope you had a blessed Easter.

Sweet Sleepy Grayson

This is my sweet kitty last CHRISTmas time. He loved to snuggle and sleep on the CHRISTmas blanket by the tree.
We have had a hard time finding a tree this year. Our normal tree place doesn’t open till the 1st and our tradition has always been to get our tree the day after thanksgiving (any one else do this?). But this year hubby was working so we couldn’t go out. Then we we visited some other places they were either closed or didn’t really have trees to choose from. I know the Christmas tree industry has been taking a hit, but it has been obvious this year. Hopefully we can find a tree soon :/

Memories of September

Last September we were able to go to the lake for a little vacation with my folks. It was actually one of the most relaxing vacations since our honeymoon over 10 years ago. Our boys came. Our lab/healer mix wanted nothing to do with the water or boat. We barley got him on the double decker dock.

Yet our terrier mix Chase absolutely loved everything about the place… the lake house, the dock, the water to swim in, and especially the boat. He loved riding on the boat and we had to make him get off when it was time to go in for the day. He also loved watching the fish from the dock and using his life jacket to swim. For a farm dog he adjusted to being a lake dog quickly 😉

Late Summer Update

Our little piece of God’s earth is trying to keep up with the change in weather from bouts of rain to dry humid heat. The grass is good when we get some rain and the chickens love all the bugs…

Chickens

The birds are still having babies and one mom has taken over our smaller birdhouse…

Inside I am trying to keep up with the housework and animals coming in and out. Chase and Grayson are always under foot trying to be “helpful”. But I do love their company.

cat grayson

Its almost our favorite month… September. Hope you are doing well wherever you are 🙂

A look back cat

I was going though some old pictures last night and came across ones of baby Grayson…

Grayson duck

He had his 3rd birthday this month and I can’t believe he used to be this small…

Baby grayson sun

Any could fit in one of my hands when we first got him…

Baby grayson

He was such a small and snuggly little baby…

Grayson Christmas

And he has grown to be a long lean cat who isn’t really that big, but is pretty long 🙂

Grayson Big

He’s not super snuggly anymore except when he first wakes up or wakes you up in the early morning hours… but he is loveable, fun, and zany at times and we wouldn’t trade him.

Summer grass

I am so glad that the summer grass has come in and the chickens have plenty of fresh, green, healthy, grass to forage in.

Chickns grass

Happy chickens=healthy chickens=good eggs 😉
