Snow Dogs on the Hunt

Our boys love to play in the snow especially when you are out with them. They love to run in any wide open space and find new places to explore.

Baxter snow

Our Chase is pretty intrigued when he is around any barn and is always trying to sniff out the critters. He is usually on high alert during these times not wanting to miss a thing.

The have enjoyed the snow now that it isn’t so cold and windy, yet now the snow is almost gone and the grass is showing, so there probably won’t be much snow for them to play in tomorrow. That’s okay because warmer weather means more hiking and walking on trails. Do you have any favorite trails or hiking spots near you that you or you and your pups like to go?

Snow to spring and back again …

That last eastern snow storm got us  Monday night into Tuesday.

sky snow

Since we knew it was coming our way we did prep work around our place. Secured the chickens and got a couple flock blocks set up plus extra water, covered up the tractors, moved the generator, and filled up the bird feeders as we like to provide a spot for the birds in the snow to get food.

There were quite a few birds that showed up…

All three boys liked watching the birds, the two pups from the door and little Grayson from the window…

We also enjoy watching them. You see a hierarchy just like you do with the chickens… interesting to watch.

I also like to see the little birds find ways to get to the good food and fool the bigger birds.

If you got this snow I hope you stayed safe and warm. I was lucky this time, hubby did the shoveling and snow blowing and I got to be inside cooking and baking. I think I got the better part of the deal 😉

And back again…

I know I just posted about the looks of spring coming to our area. I was looking forward to some nicer weather and the wind to not be so much of a bother.

tulips

But today I woke up to this… snow, cold, wind 😦 The ground, deck, and all were covered.

My flower beds were covered too and my poor budding flowers.

I guess old man winter is not ready to let go just yet. I hope it doesn’t keep my tulips and other flowers from blooming when spring does finally decide to stay. Weather says possibly more snow tonight. We shall see.

I Spy… Spring

A couple weeks ago or so it looked like this…

The boys were out playing in the snow…

It was a winter wonderland. And today….

The chickens were all over the place and loving the nicer weather…

And I have been enjoying their increase in egg production. Its not really “warm”, but defiantly not “cold”. Its hubbys kind of weather and we’ve been getting out in the yard getting things done. Happy for more “spring like” weather!

Snow, Bird, whatever that was…

Our little Grayson has a few perches in the house that he loves to sit in. During each season he has different things to watch and he will use one perch more then others. Right now he loves this one as he can see many things. He has recently been enjoying the snow falling…

Watching the birds fly from the tree right below this window or the chickens in the yard.

And sometimes I am not sure what he is seeing, but it sure keeps his interest.

Its entertaining watching him be entertained by all the things he sees. It’s also cute to hear him make little noises with different things he sees and watch him sometimes try to go after something, only realizing he can’t get it when his paw swipes the glass pane of the window. I think he is calmest though when he watches the snow… but I can’t blame him that’s when I am calmest too 🙂

Time for Snow Fun…

Good morning…. Chase is ready for more snow fun today. He can’t wait to be out again today playing and having fun.

chase

(Who can resist this face that says “mommy let me play in the snow”) The plan is to finish inside chores and in between take snow breaks to let him run about and play. I am sure Baxter will join him some of the time. Today should be full of snow adventures.

First Snow…

We had our first snow… it was so pretty.

snow-view

It started last night and went through early this morning.

After work today I took the boys out to play and enjoy the snow.

chase-play

Baxter has new boots as he is getting older and he gets colder quicker then he used to. At first he wasn’t sure of them, but then he got used to traipsing about with them on.

baxter

Chase is a big lover of snow and he loves to race about and see how fast he can go then stop quickly and turn to race the other way.

chase-run

I love to take the boys out and let them play. They are now resting and recharging for more play time in the snow tomorrow.

Best Part of Snow

There are many things you can say about snow… its cold, its wet, its messy, its too deep, its too hard to see when it gets going good… You could say all these things, but why not also see the positives? Why not see the beauty? In our recent 3 feet of snow I could have seen many negatives and at times I think the biggest negative was being sore from digging out, but looking at the picture below I see something else…

Birds n snow

I see the beauty in the snow falling softly. I see the birds using the snow as cover to come to the feeders and eat. I see quiet in the middle of a busy world (yes I know you hear quiet, but I can remember the quiet from this picture). I see the trees holding up all the snow powerful and strong. I see a beauty that is not in our world at other times. Snow can be calming, it can be relaxing, it can relieve stress, it can stop a world that is always to busy, to stressful, and to overworked. It reminds us and sometimes makes us slow down and remember that in this world where we live, we need to actually live. This snow gave hubby and I time to do a little living… living by loving on our pets, spending time together, getting some things done for us, taking some time to really rest without worrying about what was not getting done, watching the snow fall so peacefully at times we couldn’t help but to sigh and let ourselves relax. Snow can give you a different perspective and a different view of your own world.

“And the peace of God, which transends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”

-Philippians 4:7

Snow Dogs

Our boys love the snow. Especially Chase… Chase would stay out in the snow with us as long as we would let him. But usually we make him go in every so often as his poor paws gets caked with snow so we make him go in to warm up. In the 3 feet of snow we had a couple weeks ago it was a constant fight to make sure he had areas to go out and walk/run in when we went out to check on the chickens.

Dogs snow2

As the snow was going down and we were going outside more we dug more and more paths for the boys to go down and have places to move and roam.

Dogs Snow3

Chase being a bit of an explorer kept trying to go over the snow and make his own paths…

Chase snow2

It didn’t always work out for him as he would get a little ways, sink into the snow, and sometimes get stuck…

Chase snow

Then he would come back onto the paths with his big brother…

And run to catch up with him…

Any they would keep wandering down another path.

They are so cute together and good brothers 🙂

Helpers

When it is snowy, icy, or windy we check on the chickens a lot as they are usually inside their run. We are making sure they have food, water, and their laying boxes are clean. We also collect the eggs. So when we go outside we have a couple of helpers who go with us. Chase is our biggest helper. He is always up for a walk to the coop, making sure we don’t spill the water when we are taking that out, or that we don’t have any extra treats for him too.

ChasenLorne

Yesterday when we took out the water Chase was right there with us. Baxter on the other hand was content to explore and do his own thing.

Baxter

He prefers to leave the big jobs to Chase and keep the exploring and snow eating for himself. At least he was out there ‘in case’.
