Snow Dogs

Our boys love the snow. Especially Chase… Chase would stay out in the snow with us as long as we would let him. But usually we make him go in every so often as his poor paws gets caked with snow so we make him go in to warm up. In the 3 feet of snow we had a couple weeks ago it was a constant fight to make sure he had areas to go out and walk/run in when we went out to check on the chickens.

Dogs snow2

As the snow was going down and we were going outside more we dug more and more paths for the boys to go down and have places to move and roam.

Dogs Snow3

Chase being a bit of an explorer kept trying to go over the snow and make his own paths…

Chase snow2

It didn’t always work out for him as he would get a little ways, sink into the snow, and sometimes get stuck…

Chase snow

Then he would come back onto the paths with his big brother…

And run to catch up with him…

Who was happy to stay on the paths…

Any they would keep wandering down another path.

They are so cute together and good brothers 🙂

Helpers

When it is snowy, icy, or windy we check on the chickens a lot as they are usually inside their run. We are making sure they have food, water, and their laying boxes are clean. We also collect the eggs. So when we go outside we have a couple of helpers who go with us. Chase is our biggest helper. He is always up for a walk to the coop, making sure we don’t spill the water when we are taking that out, or that we don’t have any extra treats for him too.

Yesterday when we took out the water Chase was right there with us. Baxter on the other hand was content to explore and do his own thing.

Baxter

He prefers to leave the big jobs to Chase and keep the exploring and snow eating for himself. At least he was out there ‘in case’.

Birds in the Snow

Our birds have been enjoying our bird feeders that hubby has been trying to keep full.

Birdfeeder

They have been on the feeders and under them where they had dropped some of the seeds.

Birds

We have had different kinds of birds, but mostly these small little birds and robins.

Birdys2

They also have been under some of the trees I think eating berries and things that have dropped off of them.

Birdys

They have been keeping the kitten entertained as he watched from the window.

Grayson watch

I am glad our trees and feeders have kept them safe and fed in all this bad weather.

Yahhh for cute little birdies 🙂

Chickens in the Snow

I had a comment about chickens in the snow on my last post that inspired me to share about my snow dare devils. I know most chickens will avoid the snow and not even think about going out in it. I have a couple of chickens who take the risks even in the 3 feet of snow they had to get out…

And take a look around…

Chicken snow

And get stuck…

Chickensnow

Chase saw this one was stuck and decided to help her out…

chasechicken

I guess it freaked out the chicken and she tried to get out of the snow as quick as she could…

Chickensnow2

So we do have a few chickens who will risk frost bite to explore, but usually they go back in quickly and we usually don’t let them out to protect their feet, wattles, and crown. But when they have been cooped up for a day or two we open the door for them to be able to get out if they want as long as it isn’t too cold or windy. But usually only a couple take us up on it. So today while it is still overcast and windy; after this ice and snow they will stay in and stay warm.

What do you do with your chickens in the snow, bad winds, ice, etc.?

Snow Chickens

Yesterday it snowed quite a bit and today the ice and icy rain is making everything a slick mess. The dogs were slipping and sliding all around like they were on a ice rink. It made me feel bad they were slipping, but it was cute to see them try to stay upright. The chickens are staying in their coop/run again today. They have a flock block, food, hay, and water…

They started to flock ;)as soon as I put the block down.

They started to flock 😉 as soon as I put the block down.

They get all sorts of treats when there is bad weather to keep them busy and keep them from getting bored. So the flock blocks are a rare treat but has the ability to keep them all busy. They especially like it on top of hay they can scratch in as well.

Even our hurt girl got in n the action (she is the one in the middle here).

One of our New Hampshire’s was looking at the other girls pigging out for a while, before she finally joined in and had some.

Chicken head

At least on a yucky day you can still get some entrainment from your flock of chickens. another perk besides the fresh eggs. 🙂

Snow Home

We ended up getting 5 or 6 more inches of snow today. It was a pretty snow that came down hard at times and other times fell in big steady flaks, but was light and calming. Hubby and I had off and had a little time to go for a drive as we had to get chicken feed from the feed store and pick up a couple other things. When we drive to our feed store there is this house we always pass and I think is just lovely especially in the snow.

house

I don’t know what it is about this farmhouse in the middle of this field, but it has always made me happy. Its got a special beauty I am sure most people don’t see, but that okay. I see beauty in weird places. I hope you had a beautiful Monday!

More Snow?

Weather man said we may get more snow tonight and tomorrow… we still have snow from the last 3 feet. I know that’s not a lot compared to what some other Midwest states and other places get, but it’s a lot for us. Anyways, the new snow forecast reminded me I promised to share more snow pictures with you from the last snow so here goes…

Saurday

So on Friday the snow started a little after noon and by that evening it looked like this…

Friday 1

And the chicken coop was starting to get buried in…

Friday 2

We woke up Saturday morning to a full fledged wind blowing, sideways snow, cold, wet, and blinding blizzard…

Saturday2

The birds feeders were getting blown around and the drifts had started…

Saturday 1

I worked/shoveled my way to the chicken coop to check on the girls while Hubby decided to try to get out and snow blow the drive way a little incase there was an emergency and so when the snow stopped it wouldn’t be too tall or frozen to snow blow out….

Saturday5

First he had to get out when the wind had started to slow down for a bit and shovel from the front porch to the back. Chase followed him and tried to go down the back steps, but then got stuck. Hubby had to rescue him…

Saturday3

And finally was able to lift him out and back onto the steps…

Saturday4

After we got a little shoveling done and some of the drive cleared out we came inside as the wind picked back up (just to tell you how fast it was coming down by the time hubby got maybe 10 feet, where he had just finished snow blowing was already covered back up with 4+inches of snow and by Sunday had almost been completely filled back up where he had plowed). It was a cold an exhausting few hours outside.

(More on Sunday, Monday, the birds, dogs, and chickens to come.)

Snow Birthday

Every year it seems on hubbys birthday it snows. This year it was no different as I had told you in my last post. It started snowing Friday mid day and didn’t stop till sometime early Sunday morning. 3ft in total with some drifts that went taller.

Snoback

On Saturday we started snow blowing and shoveling. The snow was going sideways, but we knew if we didn’t keep up with the snow, it would freeze and make it impossible for the snow blower to work properly. So while hubby was snow blowing I was shoveling around the vehicles the walkway, and the front porch as that was the only door of the house we could get in and out. This was after we had tracked and shoveled to the chicken coop with water and treats for the chickens stuck inside.

frontporch

Sunday brought more shoveling and snow blowing to try to get my SUV dug out and more of the driveway cleared. We had it where the truck could get out… until a neighbor came by in his tractor with a plow and pushed snow all back in front of our drive. Didn’t matter anyways as the road was still so bad we couldn’t get out even with 4×4.

Chasetruck

Monday was more shoveling and attempting to dig out the mailbox, which still hasn’t completely happened.

mailbox

Tuesday more shoveling in the driveway so we could get both vehicles in and out one at a time and paths in the back yard for the dogs.

chasesnow

Both Baxter and Chase had limited times outside as I didn’t want them getting too cold or frostbitten paws. The snow was clumping especially on Chase’s fur covered paws. We decided we may need to look into snow boots for him as his paws just get covered and he won’t come in as he loves the snow so we just don’t want hurt paws. Baxter on the other hand didn’t mind not being outside he enjoyed his bed inside more.

chasesit

Grayson enjoyed watching all of us from the windows and watching the birds who came to the bird feeders we had out front.

grayson

So our snow adventure had us snowed in at our place and just chilling where we were warm, safe, and still had power so all went well. Now its back to work and life… If it wasn’t for the shoveling… I miss being snowed in and the world stopping for a few days.

Birthday Snow

Its been a snowy weekend here and we are clearing out still (more on this later). In the mean time before I post on the snow I wanted to write a special post for my hubby. The boys and I wanted to let everyone know what a good worker, daddy, and hubby he is and how many happy wishes we have for his birthday and many more with us.

Lornes Birthday Dogs

We love you and are happy to be spending this snowy birthday with you. 🙂

First Day of Spring… or was it?

On the official first day of spring it looked like this at my house…

1st day spring

And the snow just kept coming down, until poor Chase had a hard time getting around…

Chase

But finally it looks like this week spring is defeating winter as there are buds on the tree and a flower or two blooming.

sun

Its still cold, but warming up. I can’t wait for all the spring flowers 🙂
